The Sports of Speed Skating
Speed Skating is a competitive form of skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates.
Types of Speed Skating are:
* Long Track Speed Skating
* Short Track Speed Skating
* Inline Speed Skating (or inline racing)
* Marathon Speed Skating
* Quad Speed Skating.
As speed skating is very new to all of us, here’s a little birief history about the sport.
It is believed that skates were developed about 3000 years ago in Scandinavia. In the Netherlands, skating served as a way to travel over the canals in winter and the Dutch are still among the world's most avid skaters.
Speed Skating has been a part of the Olympic programme since the 1st Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix Mont Blanc in 1924.
Originally only men participated, but women's events were included in the 1960 Squaw Valley Games.
Events in Speed Skating are Short Track 500m, 1000m and 1500m; Long Track 500m, 1000m, 1500, 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m.
